As the conflict in Ukraine continues for yet another month, war fatigue sets in.
The stories fade from our 24 hour news channels. And life for us, at least, carries on as normal.
There are many people who refuse to let that happen and one of them is our very own Magda Prech.
Some of you may know Magda. She’s based in the Polish city of Poznan, around 280 kilometres from the capital city of Warsaw.
Magda started helping refugees soon after the war began, particularly with supplies of food and clothing.
Since then she’s also supported Ukrainian families in finding accommodation, settling into their new Polish communities and has even opened her own home for people to stay in.
Magda has witnessed great hardship in recent times and many stories of individual suffering but there is one example that is especially poignant.
Svietlana and Wowa left their home in Ukraine to find safety for their four young children, Lisa aged 12, who has type one diabetes, and the triplets, Wierka, Sefarimka and Makary who are just 18 months old.
Thanks to the support of Polish neighbours like Magda, they also have a flat to rent. But they need help, urgently.
Their new home is in a village, 10km from the nearest shop or doctor and 50km from Poznan.
Wawa is trying to find work to support his family but he has no means of transport; that too, was taken from him. And while the family receives some government money, it’s lower than the cost of living.
Put simply, it is a race against time.
OTD is working with Magda to raise £1,500 as part of efforts to help purchase a seven-seater car for the family.
We’ve set up a Just Giving page and are hugely thankful to those who have already donated. Any money you could spare would be greatly appreciated.
