“But where are you really from?”
You may not be familiar with the term ‘microaggression’.
It’s all about our subconscious bias and how it leaks through the things that we say and do.
It may not be our intention to offend but to understand microaggression is to consider the impact on the group or individual that’s on the receiving end.
Mamawa Turay has experienced microaggression first hand.
In fact, she’s so familiar with the topic that she has invested a considerable amount of time in understanding what it is and where it’s driven from.
Mamawa now delivers engaging sessions on the subject to businesses and teams.
We invited her to discuss microaggression with us in more depth and it’s a session we would highly recommend to others.
Mamawa not only gives an insight into how differently she has and is treated, compared to her white husband, she also focuses on her wider family, including her young children too.
Personal, effecting and thought provoking, it has inspired personal reflection and several subsequent group discussions among our team.
It has also continued the conversation we began last year with Nathan Dennis of Legacy Consultants, which is focused on racism, anti-racism and an exploration of many of the issues faced by our Black communities.
It’s one we are committed to continuing.
